The Thousand Oaks Philharmonic - Opus 25 Concert

Richard Rintoul conductor

Richard Rintoul (DMA in Conducting, UCLA; MM in Orchestral Conducting, USC; BFA in Viola Performance, Cal Arts) conducts the orchestra and teaches conducting at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is also the founding conductor of the Orchestra da Camera at the Colburn School of Performing Arts (Los Angeles) since 1987. Dr. Rintoul founded and for nine seasons conducted the Colburn Chamber Orchestra, with which he toured England & California, did national radio & television broadcasts (winning an Emmy in 1994) and recorded a well-reviewed CD, currently in international release. He spent a decade as the Director of Orchestral Activities and Director of Strings at California State University, Long Beach. There he founded the Studio Orchestra and taught advanced and graduate level conducting as well as directing the string chamber music program. He helped build the Pasadena Young Musician’s Orchestra, the Glendale Youth Orchestra and the Crossroads School Music Department (Santa Monica) into strong organizations. As a choir director, Dr. Rintoul served three southland churches for nineteen years. He was conductor of the Idyllwild Arts Summer Youth Symphony (Idyllwild, California) for eighteen seasons and for two summers, he conducted the Interlochen Philharmonic at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan.

His educational guest conducting includes work with student Honor Orchestras and High School Ensembles in a dozen states. Professionally, Dr. Rintoul has conducted the San Diego Symphony, the Downey Symphony, the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, the Inland Empire Orchestra, and recording sessions for episodes of Star Trek “Enterprise” and the “Medal of Honor” video game series among a variety of projects. He has conducted productions of “the Medium,” “The Marriage of Figaro,” “The Daughter of the Regiment” and opera galas at CSULB. Additional operatic conducting credits are for “The Mikado,” “HMS Pinafore” and “Trial By Jury” with Opera a la Carte, the world premiere and subsequent performances of “Monticello” for radio station KCRW and a stint as chorus master for the Long Beach Opera. Dr. Rintoul has also been filmed conducting much of the standard orchestral repertoire for IVASI Systems’ “Video Conductor” DVD training materials. Having played viola professionally on hundreds of film soundtracks, he remains active in the recording industry. This is his second appearance with the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic.


Tommy Do, 15 years of age, is a sophomore at Royal High School in Simi Valley. He began Tommy Do, Opus 25studying piano at the age of eight with Kenny Kotwitz and has been studying with Edward Francis for the past three years. He has won several honors in the Certificate of Merit (CM) syllabus examinations sponsored by the Music Teachers' Assn. of California (MTAC), passing the Advance Level also with honors. Additionally, he has won several MTAC Conejo Valley Contemporary Festival gold medals and was invited to perform at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza in the Gold Medal Honors Recitals.  For the past two years, Tommy has been participating in the Honors Piano Seminar at the Colburn School of Performing Arts which holds monthly classes, under the tutelage of Dr. Louise Lepley.  Besides piano, his hobbies include basketball, videogames, martial arts, reading, hanging out with friends, drawing, airsofting, listening to music, going to the gym, watching good movies, being lazy, and maintaining straight A’s in all of his honors and AP classes. This is his first concerto performance with the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic, and he is grateful for the opportunity.


Hanlu Cao, 17, is a graduate of Westlake High School. She has been studying piano since the age of 10, and with Edward Hanlu Cao, Opus 25Francis since December of 2006. Before moving to Thousand Oaks, she lived in central New York State, where she studied piano with Zhuang Liu, Stavroula Givray, and Fred Karpoff. In New York, Hanlu has twice received a gold cup for the National Federation of Music Clubs Festivals, and has also been a first place medalist in both the Central New York intermediate and advanced competitions. In California, Hanlu has won awards from the Southern California Junior Bach Festivals, the Music Teachers’ Assn. of California (MTAC) Conejo Valley Contemporary Festivals as well as the MTAC Conejo Valley Young Artists Concerto Competition. This is her second performance with the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic, the first being Opus 20. Hanlu enjoys illustrating, visiting museums, and taking care of her five-going-on-ten parakeets. She will be attending Pasadena Art Center in the fall.


Roseann Zhong, 17, will be a senior at Westlake High School this fall. She began her piano Roseann Zhong, Opus 25studies in San Diego 10 years ago. After moving to Thousand Oaks, Roseann studied with Christine Chow for five years, and then with Edward Francis for the last three years. Under both teachers' guidance, she has successfully competed in numerous Music Teachers’ Assn. of California (MTAC) Conejo Valley Contemporary Festivals as well as Southern California Junior Bach Festivals, and consistently won in both events. Roseann has also passed all MTAC Certificate of Merit syllabus examinations including the Advanced Level with highest honors.  With a passion for music and a desire to serve the community, Roseann reinitiated the Bazooka Music Club at Westlake High School and assembled a group of talented young musicians to perform at local senior centers during the last two years. Aside from pursuing her academic studies in high school and pursuing her musical agenda, Roseann engages in a number of extracurricular activities. Currently she serves as the CEO of Deuces Wild, which is a student-run company rooted in the Conejo Valley, co-president of Amnesty International, an active member of Junior State of America, and a member of Westlake High School’s girls’ tennis team. For leisure, Roseann enjoys traveling, snowboarding, reading, baking, and spending quality time with family and friends.


Sydni Adler, 18, was a valedictorian of the Agoura High School Class of 2009. She plans to attend Swarthmore College this fall.  She began playing piano at Junior Music Academy Sydni Adler, Opus 25when she was five years old, and she has adored the instrument ever since. She has studied piano with Gloria Hilliard, Peter Yazbeck, and currently, is studying with Edward Francis. Sydni has won awards in numerous recitals and festivals such as the Music Teachers’ Assn. of California (MTAC) Conejo Valley Contemporary Festival, the MTAC-Pleasant Valley Holiday Festival, the MTAC Certificate of Merit (CM) syllabus examination, and the Southern California Junior Bach Festival. During the summers of 2006 and 2007, Sydni attended the Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan, where she played in a number of incredibly inspiring master classes and ensembles with thousands of other young artists from across the globe.  During her senior year, Sydni participated in monthly piano seminars at the Colburn School of Performing Arts and received a scholarship from the Leni Fé Bland Foundation.  In addition, she had the wonderful opportunities to perform George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic during the spring of 2008. In her spare time, Sydni adores singing, acting, skiing, writing, spending time with her friends and family, and taking advantage of sunny days.  Sydni is absolutely thrilled to perform again with the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic and hopes the audience will enjoy listening as much as she enjoys playing!


Yasha Yakhnis, 16, began piano studies with Heidi Lyn Williams at the age of seven.  He became a student of Edward Francis inYasha Yakhnis, Opus 25 2005.  He has been an honor student in the Certificate of Merit (CM) syllabus examinations sponsored by the Music Teachers' Assn. of California (MTAC), and for many years has been invited to play in the Conejo Valley Branch CM Honors Recitals.  He passed the Advanced Level with very high ratings and was able to compete in the CM Advanced Panel Evaluation.  Additionally, he has participated in several MTAC Conejo Valley Contemporary Music Festivals and was chosen to perform at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza in the Gold Medal Honors Recitals.  Yasha has performed in several Southern California Junior Bach Festivals, reaching the Santa Barbara Showcase level in 2004 and 2009.  In 2008 and 2009, he was the first and second place winner respectively in the Los Angeles Romantic/Impressionistic Festival sponsored by the California Assn. of Professional Music Teachers.  He was the winner of the Thousand Oaks Teen Center Talent Show in 2006.  He was a soloist in Beethoven's Emperor Concerto with the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic during its previous season, and most recently, a recipient of the Leni Fé Bland Foundation scholarship.  Yasha will be a junior this fall at Newbury Park High School, where he is an honor student.  He was invited to the High School Honors Piano Performance Seminar at the Colburn School of Performing Arts his first year of eligibility in 2007, and again in 2008.  In addition to piano, Yasha enjoys classical music, hiking, photography, and chess.


Brent Bain is returning to music after a hiatus during which he lived in the alternate universe as a software engineer.  He Brent Bain, Opus 25decided to abandon that fantasy to pursue his roots – piano performance.  He played piano since the age of 4; therefore, returning to music was a very natural migration.  He is studying with Edward Francis at Moorpark College, where he has composed award winning film scores for the college's film school.  He is also the recent recipient of several awards from the Music Department: Outstanding Student in Music Theory, the Jean Osborn Scholarship, and the Film Composition Award.  He also won the Piano Ensemble award along with his duo piano partner, Becca Stankis; they perform together as the Stankis & Bain Duo.  Brent has several passions besides music.  He is an avid rock climber, having climbed remote locations, such as the southern islands of Thailand and regions of Nepal.  He has also spent a year and a half in Yosemite National Park. Brent enjoys photography as well and has photographed areas approachable only via backpacking or bicycling.  He looks forward to transferring to a University in 2010 to finish his Music Education degree.


Joseph Marquez, 17, will be a senior at Simi Valley High School this fall.  At the age of six, Joseph began studying piano with Ruth Humphries and is now studying with Peter Yazbeck.  He has completed the Advanced Level of the Certificate of Merit Program sponsored by the Music Teachers’ Assn. of Joeseph Marquez, Opus 25California, having passed every level with honors.  Joseph was a Regional Winner at the Southern California Junior Bach Festival and qualified for the Santa Barbara Bach Showcase.  In addition to classical music, he also plays jazz and Latin music.  Joseph gives back to his community by playing at benefit recitals, including those for the Sichuan earthquake victims, local senior citizens, and other service organizations, both on piano and saxophone.  His talent on alto sax led to top soloist awards in high school competitions as well as to participation in the Ventura County Honors Band the last four years and the Ventura County Honors All Star Jazz Band the last two years.  Joseph participates in the annual Saxtravaganza program in Valencia as the lead alto sax player.  His participation in the USA Drum Major Camp resulted in his being selected to march in the 2008 New Year’s Day Varsity Spirit Parade in London.  Joseph has a 4.4 GPA, is the President of his high school’s Key Club, Vice President of Operation Smile, a member of the California Scholastic Federation, and a devoted volunteer at the local hospitals.  He dedicates today’s performance to his family, his piano teachers, Ruth Humphries and Peter Yazbeck, and his saxophone teacher, Matt Otto.
