David Fraley, piano
John Roscigno, Conductor
Dr. Roscigno has worked extensively with professional orchestras, college orchestras, and younger musicians throughout his career. He has served as Music Director of the Conway Symphony in Arkansas, Assistant Conductor of the Tucson Symphony, and guest conductor for the Plainview Symphony and Santa Barbara Ballet Theater. In 2003 he led Opera Constanta of Romania in performances of Carmen, The Barber of Seville, and Un Ballo in Mascera.Dr. Roscigno's diverse musical career has allowed him opportunities to perform and conduct at some of the great venues of North America, including Carnegie Hall, Disney Hall, Yankee Stadium, and Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
Vlad Vizireanu
Vlad Vizireanu, Conductor, was recently appointed Associate
Conductor and Music Director Designate of the Scottsdale Baroque
Orchestra. Born in Romania, Vlad has conducted professional,
regional, and community orchestras throughout the United States
and Europe since his debut in 2009. He was awarded the first prize in
the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic Conducting Competition
in 2009 and conducted the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic in his European
debut. Since then he was invited to participate in the prestigious St. Magnus Festival
the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and has been engaged in future concerts with
the Orchestra Inginerilor in Bucharest, Romania in March of 2012. Recently, Vlad was
selected to participate in the famous Cabrillo Festival for Contemporary Music where
he was personally mentored by Marin Alsop and Gustav Meier. Earlier this year he
participated in a masterclass given by Maestro Franz Welser-Möst as part of the Cleveland
Orchestra Residency Program at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He has also
worked with Maestro James DePriest, of the Juilliard School. In 2011 Mr. Vizireanu was
selected to attend the Witold Lutoslawski International Conducting Competition. He has
also conducted the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic, Berlin
Sinfonietta, Arizona State University Symphony, Indiana University Orchestras, Medomak
Chamber Orchestra as well as numerous new music and youth ensembles throughout the
country. He has served as Assistant Conductor for the IU Philharmonic and worked with
the principal conductors of the prestigious IU Opera Program from 2009-2011. He has
also assisted concerts with Cliff Colnot of the Chicago Civic Orchestra, Kevin Noe of
Michigan State University, and Uriel Segal, former Music Director of the Chautauqua
Music Festival. A native of Los Angeles, he received his B.S. degree with a double major
in piano performance and music history from UCLA in 2007, where he won the Joshua
Schapiro Scholarship for Excellence. He received a Master's degree in Musicology in 2009
from UT-Austin where he studied conducting with Peter Bay of the Austin Symphony. He
earned his next Master's degree in orchestral conducting from Indiana University Jacobs
School of Music in 2011. Currently, he is a doctoral student at the University of Arizona
Tempe where he serves as Assistant Conductor to the ASU Symphony Orchestra. He is the
recipient of an ASU Special Talent Scholarship and teaching assistant of ensembles at ASU .
Grace Chen, piano
Grace Chen is a third grader at Beacon Hill Classical Academy.
Under the direction of her teacher Edward Francis, she has had
the opportunity to compete and win the gold medal in this year's
Contemporary Music Festival. In addition to enjoying piano, Grace
loves play dates, sleepovers, and sports. She has a red belt in karate,
plays soccer with a passion, and runs track with an even greater zeal.
She has won numerous blue ribbons for the 100m, 200m, and long jump and dreams of
qualifying for the Junior Olympics in these events. Grace is very grateful, honored, and
humbled for this opportunity to perform with the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic and
to work with conductor Dr. John Roscigno. She is extremely thankful to her parents for
their support, to Ruth Kuo, her first piano teacher, for helping her build a firm foundation
in piano, to Mr. Francis for his patient instruction and confidence in her, to Mr. Devin
Smith, the headmaster of Beacon Hill, for teaching her wisdom in chapel every morning,
and most importantly to the Lord for daily grace.
Khai Berry, piano
Khai Berry is a sixth grader at A. E. Wright Middle School. His began
studying piano when he was four years old, and at age six became a
student of his present teacher, Ornela Ervin. He has won Contemporary,
Bach, and Romantic competitions and also enjoyed honors status in
the YouTube Festimantic. He has been invited to play in the exciting
Gold Medal Honors Recital at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.
More recently as a member of the "Appassionata" program, Khai performance in a master class with
French Pianist Francoise Regnat. As a visual artist, Khai has won many art competitions
and his work has been featured on district calendars and mentioned in local media. In 2010
his painting won the first place Anne D'Angelo Trophy for his school in the Las Virgenes
District Water Awareness competition. He also has a keen interest in the environment and
has made several speeches on Calabasas TV about the benefits of recycling for our Earth.
He has been a member of a swim team for six years and loves snowboarding, mountain
biking, and fencing. He has completed one year professional training in a conservatory for
young actors, and last August his first TV commercial was aired for Disney. At school he is
a straight-A student and has been described as a gifted writer. His second instrument is the
trumpet, which he plays in the school band. He is very well-traveled and loves to visit new
places. At home, where his drawings and books are showcased, he likes to be with friends
and family. Khai is excited and honored to perform with the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic.
He dedicates his performance to the memory of his greatest fan, his grandmother, Pearl Berry.
Drew Dahms, violin
Drew Dahms, 17, is a senior at Westlake High School, and has studied
the cello for 9 years, first in the school strings program at Westlake Hills
Elementary, then under Valerie Miuccio of Agoura Hills. For the last
two years he has been a student of Andrew Cook. He enjoys playing in
all types of music ensembles. This is his fifth year in the Conejo Valley
Youth Orchestra, third year playing with a Junior Chamber Music Association (piano,
cello violin trios), and first year playing in the American Youth Symphony in Los Angeles.
His Honors Trio from JCM, will perform at the famous Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria
later this Spring. He has participated in the Gold Coast Chamber Music Festival, for the
past two summers, and at the Marrowstone Music Festival, in Bellingham, Washington.
He enjoyed playing in a studio orchestra this fall for an NBC pilot featuring ex-NFL
quarterback Kurt Warner. This experience was apropos since Drew's interest in football led
him to be quarterback for Westlake High. He decided to forgo further experiences on the
gridiron in order to devote all of his extracurricular hours to music and plans to major in
cello performance in college.
Henry Beal
Henry Beal, a junior at Agoura High School, is an electric bass player
who has enjoyed a diverse musical experience. He began his first studies on
piano, and sang for three years with the Los Robles Children's Choir,
performing with the Amadeus Choir at Carnegie Hall in 2007. Henry
has played trumpet for six years, and is currently principal trumpet in
the Agoura High Honors Wind Ensemble and studies privately with
Bob Faust. He traveled with this group to the Chicago Festival of Bands
in the spring of 2011, where the ensemble took first place in their division. Henry is also
lead trumpet in the Studio Jazz Band and went to the Savannah Swing Central Festival
with this group in 2011, placing third. He will be returning with Studio Jazz to Savannah
in March 2012 and will perform as lead trumpet in the big band and as bassist in the Studio
Combo. Henry will be performing on trumpet with the California All State Honor Band
later in February. Henry first began his bass studies on electric bass, and is now also working
on acoustic technique with bassist and teacher Dave Robaire. He is playing upright bass in
the Studio Jazz combo at Agoura High and plays electric bass regularly for the Regeneration
Worship Service at Westminster Presbyterian Church. He also enjoys composing, producing
and engineering his own music. As a professional studio musician, he has recorded for
film and television programs as a vocalist (King Kong, Rome, Jesse Stone) and bassist
(Ugly Betty, Luck, GCB).When he's not making music (which isn't often), Henry enjoys
technology – mainly working on computers, programming and gaming.
Cameron Daly
Cameron Daly, 15, began playing the violin at age 8 and currently
studies with Alexander Treger. Cameron developed a serious interest
in the violin at the age of 11 through his work with his prior teacher
Elise Goodman. Cameron enjoys playing in the Conejo Valley Youth
Orchestra where he is currently in his fourth year of membership. In
addition, he is a member of the Colburn Chamber Orchestra, having
played in Colburn's Orchestra da Camera last year. Cameron has a passion for chamber
music and is in his fourth year in the Junior Chamber Music program with which his honors
trio, coached by Andrew Cook and Edward Francis, will tour and perform at the Mozarteum
in Salzburg, Austria this coming Spring. Cameron attends Oaks Christian High School where
he is the orchestra's concert master. He has won numerous awards through such programs as
the MTAC Certificate of Merit, Bach Festival, Contemporary Festival, and others. He has
spent the past few summers at the Luzerne Music Festival in New York and the Jacobs School
Summer Strings Academy at Indiana University. Cameron gets great satisfaction in using his
music for charitable purposes, organizing his own fundraiser for JDRF and performing at other
fundraising events, and performing at various senior living facilities. In his spare time,
Cameron also enjoys playing basketball with friends, and spending time with his family.
Sebastian Saw
Sebastian Saw is a freshman at Westlake High School's honors program.
Sebastian began studying violin at age 5. In 2006, he started his violin
tutelage with Mrs. Shuwei Liu, and his interest in violin has progressed
steadily. He was a member of the Los Cerritos Middle School Chamber
Orchestra for three years and currently a member of the Westlake High
School Chamber Orchestra, both under the direction of Elizabeth
Blake. In addition to his school music program, Sebastian is also
a dedicated member of the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra under
conductor Bill Benson. He has passed various levels in the CM syllabus exams with
honors and is currently preparing for the Level 9 exam this year. Besides performing for
the school and community, Sebastian is also an active participant at the Southwestern
Youth Music Festival, and has won consistently for the past five years, including 1st place
in the duet qualified program, 2nd in the ensemble category, and 3rd and 4th for the
solo qualified events. In 2011, he and his twin brother won the top honor at the MTAC
Conejo Valley Branch Concerto Competition. In addition to playing the violin, Sebastian
swims at the Class Aquatics Club on a regular basis. He also enjoys mountain biking,
barbecuing, traveling, camping and skiing. Sebastian is honored and very excited to have
the opportunity to perform with Thousand Oaks Philharmonic.
Shannon Saw
Shannon Saw has been living in the Conejo Valley since age 3. An
honor program student, this is his first year attending Westlake High
School. For the past 6 years, Shannon has been studying violin with
Mrs. Shuwei Liu. Under her guidance, Shannon's musical skills have
grown immensely. He won a number of awards in the past five summers
participating in the Southwestern Youth Music Festival, winning first
place for his duet performance, second for the ensemble category, both performed with
his twin brother, as well as the second place for his solo qualified event. Subsequently,
together with his twin brother, Shannon won top honor at the 2011 MTAC Conejo Valley
Branch Concerto Competition. Shannon completed the CM syllabus exams with honors
and is working on completing the requirements for the Level 9 exam this year. Shannon
has been a member of Chamber Orchestra for his schools, first with Los Cerritos Middle
School, and now with Westlake High School, both under the direction of Elizabeth Blake.
He is also a member of the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra, conducted by Mr. Bill Benson.
Shannon is an active member of the Class Aquatics Swim Club. In his free time, Shannon
likes to cook, read, ski and swim. Shannon would like to take this opportunity to thank
all his teachers, friends and family for their continuous support.
David Fraley
David Fraley, 15, is a sophomore honors student at Rio Mesa High
School. He began playing the piano at age 5 with Julie Elliott and is
currently a student of Edward Francis. For the past six years, David
has been a gold medal winner in the Contemporary Festival as well as
finalist at the Southern California Junior Bach Festival Regional and
Showcase levels. In the MTAC Certificate of Merit syllabus examinations,
he has passed the highest Advanced Level and appeared in the Honors
Recital every year of eligibility. David has been awarded performance scholarships from
the Santa Barbara Foundation Leni Fe Bland competitive auditions and was a guest soloist
at a Mozart Seminar hosted by California State University, Channel Islands. He won
first place in the 2008 Los Angeles Romantic Music Competition, the CAPMT Sonata
Festival and was an invited finalist in the Richard Carpenter Scholarship Competition
for two straight years. He received alternate status in the 2008 State of California Concerto
Competition. When he was 13, he participated in the a competition to play with the
Brentwood-Westwood Symphony Stars of Tomorrow competition and received Honorable
Mention in a category that included collegiate students. He was a soloist with the Thousand
Oaks Philharmonic at a concert given at the Ventura Music Festival in 2010. From that
performance, he received an invitation from the festival to be a guest artist on their "Rising
Stars" program, where he will play a solo recital this coming May. In the world outside
of music, he is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and plays on a club soccer team, and is a
member of his high school cross-country team.
