John Roscigno, Conductor
Dr. Roscigno has worked extensively with professional orchestras, college orchestras, and younger musicians throughout his career. He has served as Music Director of the Conway Symphony in Arkansas, Assistant Conductor of the Tucson Symphony, and guest conductor for the Plainview Symphony and Santa Barbara Ballet Theater. In 2003 he led Opera Constanta of Romania in performances of Carmen, The Barber of Seville, and Un Ballo in Mascera.Dr. Roscigno's diverse musical career has allowed him opportunities to perform and conduct at some of the great venues of North America, including Carnegie Hall, Disney Hall, Yankee Stadium, and Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
Brian Ma
Brian Ma is a 7th grade honor student in the Discover Academy at
Sequoia Middle School. He started studying violin with Shuwei Liu at
the age of eight after listening to his friend's violin recital. Brian won
second place in the SYMF violin duet competition with his sister, and
the fourth place in the solo competition in 2011. He also won first
place in the SYMF violin competition in 2010, second place in 2009
and the third place in 2008. Brian is a member of the CVYO Preparatory Orchestra. Brian
performed as a violin featured soloist in Opus 31 with Thousand Oaks Philharmonic in
2011. He was also one of the soloists at Thousand Oaks Philharmonic's Golden Recital
in July 2011. Brian loves to play tennis. He is currently a student of Jerry Yu, a CLU
tennis assistant coach. Brian won second place at the Ventura County Novice Tennis
Tournament for boys 12-and-under at the Pacific Tennis Club in November 2011. In his
free time, Brian loves to read. He also loves to ski in the winter.
Megan Ervin, piano
Megan Ervin is a sixth grader and a straight-A student at Bethany
Christian School in Thousand Oaks. She has played piano since the
age of four – a fact that is not too surprising given that her mother,
Ornela Ervin, is a piano teacher. Megan has been selected several times
as a winner of the Southern California Junior Bach Festival at both
the branch and regional competitions, has played frequently in the Contemporary Music
Gold Medal Honor Recitals at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, has played in the YouTube
Festimantic! competition and related honors recitals, and has played in the Certificate of
Merit Honors recitals for the Conejo Valley MTAC branch. Last summer she was also
selected to perform at the MTAC State Convention in Northern California. Megan participates
in the APPASSIONATA Conservatory Training Program and has played at different venues
and master classes as part of the program. She regularly performs in musical events at her
school, enjoys being involved in her church's youth group, and spends her free time reading
and playing with her Labradoodle puppy, Hershey. This is Megan's second performance
with the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic.
Megan Wu, piano
Megan Wu is a seventh grade student at Colina Middle School. She
began playing piano at the age of six, studying with Dr. Christine
Chow for almost 5 years. Currently, she studies piano with Mr. Edward
Francis. She has passed the Advanced Level of MTAC Certificate of
Merit Evaluation at age 11, and was invited to play at the MTAC
State Convention. Megan has actively participated in recitals and
competitions and won numerous local and regional awards. She won second place in
her first competition, the 2008 CAPMT Sonata competition. A year later, she won first
place in the 2009 CAPMT Sonata Competition. She was the showcase winner for MTAC
Baroque Festival, and has been to the regional competition for the Bach Festival. She
has also performed multiple times at the Civic Arts Plaza as a Gold Medal pianist in the
Contemporary Music Festival. Besides piano, Megan's hobbies include reading, writing, and
spending time with her friends. She also enjoys having fun with her older sister, Jennifer.
Kevin Ye, violin
Kevin Ye is an AP/Honors sophomore at Westlake High School with a
4.0 GPA . He violin lessons started at the age of ten with Manxia Wu
and Jianhua Zhong. He became a student of Joyce Osborn in 2008. Last
year, in the Advanced Level of CM he performed at the MTAC State
Convention. He also participated in the MTAC VOCE competition,
and placed second in the final level of the So. Cal Jr. Bach Festival.
Kevin has played in master classes with Dr. Ernie Salem, Tricia Park, and Martin Chalifour,
concertmaster of the LAP hil. Last summer, he performed in the TOP hil's Gold Recital
Series and in a joint fundraiser concert celebrating the partnership of the TOP hil and the
Ventura County Community Foundation. As an avid chamber musician, Kevin played
in a quartet coached by Mrs. Osborn which participated in the VOCE state competition
at Chapman University. The quartet also played in a master class with Juilliard Quartet
founding violinist Joseph Silverstein, and was featured at the Westminster Presbyterian
Church for its "Prime Time" presentation of the CVYO . In his fourth year with CVYO ,
Kevin serves as the Principal Second Violinist of the Youth Orchestra, and plays first violin
in Westlake High School's Chamber Orchestra. Kevin is first violinist in a school quartet,
which performed at the12th district's annual PTSA Honorary Service Awards night and
recently at the Sunrise Senior Living Center. In addition to music, Kevin played on the
Freshman/Sophomore volleyball team, was honored as team MVP and earned a spot on
the Oxnard All-Tournament team. He also plays with Bones Volleyball, a Division 1A
club team in the SoCal Volleyball Assn. He has volunteered at the Discover Center for
Science and Technology, and is currently a Volunteer Usher at the Civic Arts Plaza and a
coach for the Saturday Girls Volleyball League at the TO Teen Center. In his spare time,Kevin loves to read, write, participate in math competitions, and play beach volleyball.
Eric Zhong
Eric Zhong is a seventh grader at Colina Middle School. Eric has
loved music from a very early age and studied classical piano with
Christine Chow from age seven to nine. Since then, he has been a
student of Edward Francis. Eric has been a winner of the Conejo Valley
Music Teachers' Association branch Bach Festival, gold medalist of
Contemporary Music Festival and winner of YouTube Festimantic!
competition. Eric also plays viola and drums and performed on both instruments at
Musician's Depot's "Rock Night" concerts. Outside music Eric was champion of Colina
Middle School 2011 spelling bee, student of the year for Colina Middle School Boys
and Girls Club 2010, and was Scrooge's nephew in 2011 Boys and Girls clubplay, "A
Christmas Carol." He participated and won third place in the 2011 Conejo Valley Lego
competition. In sports he swims at Classic Aquatics, practices Karate at American Eagles
Karate and plays tennis with his father. Eric is an avid reader, loves math, history, good
food and playing video games with friends and his little sister.
Victoria Juan
Victoria Juan is a seventh grader at Sycamore Canyon Middle School.
She first began playing piano at age 5 and has studied piano under Mrs.
Jocelyn Yom, Mrs. Jenny Hara, and Mr. Jeffrey Lavner. In the fall of
2010 Victoria began studying piano under Mr. Edward Francis and has
been his student ever since. She has been awarded numerous honors in
various piano competitions, such as the Southern California Junior Bach Festival and the
MTAC Contemporary Festival. She is a member of the Hammered! Master Class Seminar
as part of APPASSIONATA!, and has played in master classes for visiting concert artists
and professors. Studying classical piano has been a great adventure filled with surprising
joy and constant challenge and it enriches her life tremendously. Besides playing piano,
Victoria also enjoys reading, writing, drawing, swimming, playing volleyball, and
spending time with her friends and family. She is a straight-A student at school and hopes
to become a physician when she grows up.
David Huang
David Huang is a freshman at Westlake High School. At age 7, he
began playing piano with Mrs. Angela Yi-Jin Hsu, and he currently
studies with Mr. Edward Francis. In 2008, David won a Fe Bland
Foundation Scholarship from the Santa Barbara Foundation, and a 1st
place scholarship in the International Classical Music Contest from the
Reverie Youth Symphony Orchestra. David has been recommended the
Honors Festival each year of syllabus examinations. He has successfully
earned many gold medals as winner at the MTAC Conejo Valley Branch Contemporary
Music Festival, has won at the So. Cal Jr. Bach Festivals, as well as the YouTube Festimantic!
competition. Last year, he played the Ravel Concerto in G with the Thousand Oaks
Philharmonic, as winner of the MTAC Concerto Competition. He won second place in
the CAPMT Romantic/ Impressionistic Festival and he received an honorable mention
at the MTAC State Solo and Concerto Competition. He has also participated in JCM,
a chamber music program, and played piano for the musical Chicago during a summer
production earlier this year. He is a current participant in the Hammered! Master Class
Honors Seminar. In addition to piano, he has played the violin since 2007. He won first
place in Division XX at the Annual Southwestern Youth Music Festival in 2009. David
currently plays 1st violin in the CVYO Preparatory Orchestra. Aside from playing piano and
violin, David also enjoys reading, running, listening to theatre music, and practicing karate.
